Would you like to stay in an authentic and charming house in Ypres? Well, let me welcome you in Ciepers Lodge.  Recently we completely renovated the house into a spacious, warm and cosy holiday home.  As the house gets sunshine all day, it bathes in light. So we suggest you to have a sit in the cosy veranda outside to relax and have a look outside.

Although the house is situated in the center of the city, the street is very rustique and silent.  There is a free parking space next to the house, on the Minneplein (or translated in English: the ‘lovers-place’).  The house is rented as a whole to your group or family, so you can fully enjoy your privacy. A bit hungry or thirsty at your arrival? Restaurants and bars are at walking distance.

Maybe you wonder where the name Ciepers Lodge comes from? Well, Ciepers is one of the best known giant cats, a character from the cat’s parade.  It has been held  on the second Sunday of May since 1955.  The parade commemorates an Ypres tradition from the Middle Ages in which cats were thrown from the belfry tower of the Cloth Hall to the town square below. In the parade, Ciepers has a family together with his wife, Minneke Poes. They have 5 kittens, so we named each room after them.

A short history of the surroundings of Ciepers Lodge

The first slaughterhouse was built in 1861. It was destroyed in 1914, just like the rest of Ypres. The director’s house was rebuilt in the early twenties.  It is standing in front of hotel Ariane. In the 30’s, the nr 56 (now Ciepers Lodge) was constructed in the typical rebuilding style with a slight modernistic touch.  The houses 56, 54 en 52 seem to be connected by the same arched back wall, which you can still see in the livingroom.   In the house lived Mr. Camerlynck.  He was a meat trader and he cooled his meat in the cool chambres in nr 54.  In 1996 the house was bought by my parents. They completely renovated the house but kept as much as possible the original elements of the house.  The doors, the stairs and the wooden floors are still the original ones. The sunlight is falling in all day due to the many windows. So, enjoy this authentic house with it’s modern comfort.

Attention: Be carefull with parking on the street! Parking at the Slachthuisstraat is reserved for residents. You can park for free on the Minneplein (next to the house)

Ypres is known as the Cat City! Every 3 years there is a big Cat’s parade. And in that parade Ciepers is the name of one of the Giant Cats, walking in the parade. Another character of the Cat Parade is the lovely Minneke Poes. Ciepers and Minneke Poes have a little family together, so last Cat parade, in 2018, five new characters came into the spectacle. These are the 5 newborn kittens. The locals from Ypres chose their names  and so the cats were called Mimi, Snoezie, Neki, Bas and Bert.

I am a vet and a cat breeder, also Ciepers Lodge opened in May 2018, the weekend from the Cat Parade. So I had no other choice than to give the name from this wonderful black-white cat ot the house: Ciepers! And of course, as I have five bedrooms, they all got a name from 1 of the kittens.
