History

As the name Slachthuisstraat suggests, there used to be a slaughterhouse on this spot. In World War I, the slaughterhouse was destroyed but rebuilt again, along with the houses next to it. Later, Hotel Ariane was built on the site of the slaughterhouse. At the back of Ciepers Lodge you can still see the wall with the arches in it, it continues over some houses (No. 54 and No. 52). This wall is still a remnant of the original cold room. Just before the slaughterhouse is the street Veemarkt, not illogically close to the slaughterhouse. A former meat trader lived in this house until the 1990s. Then my parents bought the house and renovated it, preserving many authentic elements such as the high doors, the staircase and the wooden floor.

Authentic vacation home

Because of the many windows and the beautiful location on a corner, it did not take much to turn the house into a cozy vacation home. The house is bathed in light all day and thanks to the authentic interior doors, the old staircase and wooden floors, there is instant atmosphere. In 2018, during the weekend of the cat parade in Ypres, the house was rented out for the first time. It was therefore very appropriately named after the parade's main giant cat: Ciepers. During that parade, the family of Ciepers and Minneke cat was also introduced for the first time. Accordingly, our 5 bedrooms were named after the kittens of Ciepers and Minneke: Neko, Snoezie, Mimi, Bas and Bert.

About me and Ypres, the cat city

In daily life I am a veterinarian and thus very much involved in the welfare and health of cats. It is therefore not surprising that our vacation home is named after a cat. Ypres is widely known as 'cat city'. We therefore like to do something special for people with a cat. If you can't miss your cat during your vacation, you can bring it along. We are prepared for it! For families with children, the story of the Ypres giants Ciepers and Minneke will be further developed. Discover the adventures of the cats of Ypres at Ciepers Lodge!

About Us

Coming Home

My name is Annick and I am from Reninge, a quiet village not far from Ypres. I spent my high school years in Ypres. Later I went to live somewhere else. Still, my heart lies in Ypres. The Ypres people speak my language, I enjoy coming there to store and we regularly go out to eat. It always feels a bit like coming home. Ciepers Lodge is the house where my parents used to live. After they left, the house was substantially remodeled, so now it is a spacious vacation home.

Privacy

A weekend in Ypres with your group of friends or family should be a moment of connection and renewed attention to each other. You are going on a trip together as a family or group and you are completely free to make your own decisions. For this reason I am only present in the background. The door opens with a Nuki lock. Before arrival you will receive the code. You can always call or text me if anything. I will make sure everything is in order before you arrive, but otherwise enjoy your freedom and privacy! I would say enjoy your stay!

For You

I have furnished the vacation home for you as I would like to go on vacation myself. Quiet, privacy, a cozy interior and the necessary comfort are basic conditions for me to be able to relax with friends or children or grandchildren and immerse myself in the history and atmosphere of a city. If there are also inspiring restaurants and a nice terrace in the sun, the weekend can't get any better for me.

What to do in Ypres

Medieval glory

Ypres experienced a gigantic heyday in the Middle Ages. Witness to this are the Cathedral, the Cloth Halls and the many beautiful historic houses. The whole city was shot in ruins during WWI, but the inhabitants decided to rebuild their city after the war, just as it was before the war!

The tragedy of WWI

The city of Ypres was in the middle of the front line during WWI. In and around Ypres, countless cemeteries now bear witness to this deadly past. Every evening the Last Post is played at the Menin Gate and the "In Flanders Field" museum brings the war years back to life in an impressive way.

Cycling and hiking

The Westhoek with its many farms, war cemeteries and abandoned sites has a distinct nostalgia about it. In recent years, much effort has gone into improving the hiking and biking trails in and around Ypres. Be prepared for the quietest and most peaceful spots in forest, agricultural and hilly areas! And especially enjoy the breaks with accompanying local beer!

Bellewaerde

Recreation

Near Ypres is Bellewaerde, a recreational park with animals, play equipment and a recently renovated indoor pool. Very nice and convenient for parents or grandparents with young children. Other recommendations are Domein de Palingbeek and Dikkebusvijver.
